What are travel packs?
Travel packs are pre-purchased usage for data, voice, and sms messaging for use when using the cell phone outside the country. Roaming usage is when a cell phone is connected and used outside of the home network. In our case, it is when the cell phone is used outside of the Rogers network. Travel packs get applied when a phone is roaming internationally. By using a travel pack, we avoid being charged a per usage rate which is typically a higher cost than a travel pack of equivalent usage.
Please note that users traveling on personal trips with school-owned cell phones are personally responsible for the additional roaming charges.
Cost of travel packs
Here is the spreadsheet of the cost of the travel packs. There are separate travel packs for data, voice, and sms messaging. By default, the lowest cost travel pack gets applied to the phone and is billed to the phone number when the phone is connected to the roaming network and when the phone uses that particular service. This can happen automatically when you disable Airplane Mode on the phone. Also, there may be applications on your phone which use data in the background which will also incur roaming charges.

What happens if I use the entire allotment of a travel pack?
If the entire allotment is used, then the phone will be charged the pro-rated rate for the travel pack. It's important to be aware of how much of the travel pack is being used during the trip. Rogers will send notifications to the phone when the usage is at 50%, 75%, and 100% increments. Gerald will also receive these notifications and will reach out when this happens.
What happens if I do not use the entire allotment of a travel pack?
Because, a travel pack is essentially pre-paying for usage, the entire cost of the travel pack is charged regardless of whether or not it is used in its entirety. You will be charged the same amount whether you use 1 MB of data or the entire 250 MB of data.
How do I know which travel pack to choose?
This would depend on your usage and the duration away. There isn't a real accurate way to gauge how much data will be used. However, typically image and video heavy applications like Youtube, messaging applications, and social media applications will use up more data than just using email. If it is unclear which packs to choose, please speak with IT prior to the trip to help.
How does the travel pack get charged to my phone and how do I know when it has been applied?
If you are borrowing a phone for a school trip, you will be assigned an available phone and if a travel pack has been requested, then it will be applied to the phone for when it is scheduled to be loaned out. Please contact Gerald for the correct cost of the travel packs so that it can be added to the trip budget accordingly. Once the school receives the invoice, Gerald will reach out to the trip organizer so that the invoice can be paid accordingly.
If you have a school-owned phone assigned to you, then please email Gerald preferably 2 weeks before the trip or sooner to purchase the travel pack. Once the travel pack has been purchased, there will be a notification on the phone mentioning the travel pack has been applied.
Gerald will issue an invoice with the total charges at the end of the billing cycle.
