This tutorial goes over how to change your default mail client. This is required if you will be sending out emails via Veracross

Step 1: Open Mail preferences

  • Open the Mail App
  • From the Menu bar, navigate to Mail > Preferences

You may first need to temporarily configure an email account in the Mail App before being able to access Mail preferences



Step 2: Choose your preferred email client

  • From the General tab, select your Default email reader


Windows 10

Step 1: Open the Default Apps settings

  • Click on the Notifications icon in the task bar
  • Select All Settings

  • Select the Apps option and then select Default Apps

Step 2: Select your preferred email client

  • Click on the currently selected default email client

  • Select your preferred email client

Windows 11

Step 1: Open the Default apps settings

  • Click on the gear icon from the quick settings in the task bar

  • Select the Apps option on the left and then select Default apps

Step 2: Select the default mail app

  • In the field titled Enter a file type or link type, type in mailto
  • You will see the current default app for email
  • Click on it to bring up a list of available email clients
  • Select your preferred email client and press OK


Additional Configuration for Google Chrome

Step 1: Go to Gmail in Chrome


  • In the Chrome address bar, select the Protocol Handlers icon
  • Select the Allow radio option to give Gmail permission to open email links
  • Click Done



If you do not see the Protocol Handlers (two overlapping diamonds) icon in your Chrome browser address bar, you will have to re-enable mail.google.com to be able to clicked email links.
  • Type chrome://settings/handlers into your Chrome address bar and press the Enter key on your keyboard
  • Make sure that Sites can ask to handle protocols is selected and that you remove mail.google.com from the Not allowed to handle protocols list

  • Go back to your Gmail and refresh the page
  • In the Chrome address bar, select the Protocol Handlers icon
  • Select the Allow radio option to give Gmail permission to open email links
  • Click Done
